Under construction

Jessica’s Joy

This is a challenging spot as the damaged cement of the staircase is the backdrop for the plants. It is on the west side of the house so it gets the late afternoon sun in summer. There was an old double plum blossom that had stopped blooming for many years. I used slices of an old spruce tree from the City landfill site to create an organic raised bed in 2009 to get plants started which was removed in 2013 to expand the bed. The old spruce stumps created alternative stairs for children. This bed has undergone big changes every year. The Double Plum Blossom needs lots of room and only blooms for a brief period.
