Achillea filipendulina ‘Moonshine’ Yarrow

The Royal Horticultural Society gave the Achillea ‘Moonshine’ the Award of Garden Merit.-It blossoms from early summer through the autumn with large clustered bright yellow flowers, appearing from early summer through the autumn. This photo was taken on August 21, 2014.

Yarrow is drought-tolerant and is recommended for butterfly gardens. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun, but is easy to grow in many conditions. There are a number of other yellow and purple flowers that bloom in August that make good companion plants for this hardy golden yarrow.

I like this plant for its height, the texture and colour of its leaves.

The yellow yarrow in the Parkdale Community Garden is in the bed originally created by the Baha’i-inspired Youth Group and now tended by Paula. It has a Honey Crisp apple tree surrounded by wild strawberries. I think the new name of this perennial bed could be Honey Crisp and strawberries? There is a white current bush and a decorative honeysuckle with inedible red berries. A number of new perennials were planted there in 2022, including Sea Lavender from Another Calgary Garden, echinacea, ground covers…
