Fragaria vesca Wild strawberry

The wild strawberry spreads rapidly and can be used as an excellent groundcover along the edges of perennial beds. We have lots in Parkdale Community Garden to the delight of young visitors. They are easily uprooted to divide and share. The 2 cm-wide white five-petalled flowers with a yellow center, are among the earliest blossoms to appear in May in Calgary. The tiny, red, sweet berries begin to ripen in June and continue producing fruit into July in the Calgary area.
