Saponaria officinalis Soapwort is a vigourous perennial that spreads through its seeds and rhizomes. It is considered to be an invasive plant in much of North America. It does best in a sunny location in soil that is not rich. It spreads in good soil and it does not prefer hot conditions. Deadheading increases the growth of new blossoms. Cut back in the fall.

Because of its bitter taste hares and deer are not attracted to soapwort.

This photo was taken on 30 July 2020. In my garden its white blossoms on tall stems provide a contrast to the red blossoms of the Maltese Cross.

A gentle soap is made by soaking the roots of the saponaria officinalis.
